Brewer / Cellarperson
Brewers rotate through all facets of day-to-day operation, from the receipt and processing of raw materials to the processing and delivery of the final product. The scope of job duties includes brewing, cellar work, filtration, kegging, canning, CIP and cleaning. Ideal team members grasp the entire brewing process from malt to can, have a desire to improve process and procedures and aid in their implementation.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
No direct supervisory responsibilities. May oversee activities based on expertise or knowledge.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Adhere to safety guidelines, including parts and equipment maintenance, maintaining an orderly and safe work environment in department and facility, always wearing appropriate PPE, and learning and following all standard operating procedures to the letter for all tasks.
- Product production; assisting with updating protocols as needed.
- Start up and shutdown of brewery facility and equipment.
- Operate the brew system to mash, boil and separate solids, and chill wort.
- Operate mill to crush grain for upcoming batches.
- Operate a forklift to move/organize pallets of malt, dispose of spent grain, and receive occasional deliveries.
- Assist with spent grain disposal and cleaning of the mash tun.
- CIP and sanitizing of fermenters, bright beer tanks, beer lines, and yeast prop tanks.
- CIP and/or sanitizing brewing tanks and equipment. (mash tun, boil kettle, whirlpool, hot/cold liquor tanks, hopback)
- Fermentation monitoring, including gravity measurement and dry hopping of fermenters and its documentation.
- Daily operation of centrifuge and filtration equipment
- Maintain fermentation logs.
- Maintain turbidity, CO2 and O2 levels within product specifications.
- Clean and sanitize filtration equipment and lines
- Maintain cleanliness of the cellar area, brewhouse, and mill/grain storage rooms, floors, tank exteriors, etc. and maintaining cleaning logs for each designated area.
- Monitor quality parameters and work to resolve issues promptly.
- Assist packaging team when needed in keg cleaning, kegging, and canning operations.
- Participate in occasional outside events such as beer festivals, beer dinners, concerts, etc.
- Ad hoc projects as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Must be self-motivated, have excellent written skills, verbal communication and a strong initiative-based work ethic and be at least 21 years old.
- Ability to operate a Powered Industrial Truck (forklift). Certification on forklift operation preferred.
- Safely work with hazardous chemicals
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with independent time-managed work ethic.
- Able to thrive in a collaborative team atmosphere, focusing on quality improvement.
Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent required;
- Minimum 3 years of brewery experience preferred. Brewery specific education preferred
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to frequently reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds using safe lifting methods.
- Close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Work near moving mechanical parts.
- Moderate noise level.
- Flexible availability, including evening and weekend hours.
