The Account Specialist is responsible for assisting in the execution of all sales-related objectives in the market as well as being a go-to person for Modern Times fans regarding all things Modern Times: history, beers, upcoming beer festivals, tastings, and other events as needed. The Account Specialist will often be the person with whom fans and potential buyers of Modern Times’ beers and coffee will interact. It is the Account Specialist’s responsibility to represent Modern Times in the most informative way possible while providing an outstanding service experience for every person. The Account Specialist reports to the Market Development Manager and/or Area Sales Manager. Candidates must share Modern Times’ commitments to quality, safety, business ethics, and continuous innovation.


  • Be an expert in all things Modern Times including but not limited to brand identity, understanding of the craft beer and coffee industry including but not limited to; knowledge of the craft brewing/ coffee production process, styles, and ingredients.
  • Must have a base level understanding of the outside sales process
  • Passionately, pursue and execute sales objectives as directed by MDM/ASM
  • Continuously update, educate and inform accounts about Modern Times developments
  • Be capable of identifying future opportunities for Modern Times through consumer dialogue and event activation
  • Interface with consumers and accounts as a representative of the brand
  • Provide timely and accurate post-event reporting and communicate ideas for improved program development
  • Interact in a friendly, enthusiastic, energetic, and outgoing manner with management, clients, and consumers in all settings
  • Develop and foster strong relationships with accounts in assigned territory
  • Assess customer’s individual usage needs and interests in order to best recommend products
  • Continually learn and retain detailed, precise, often scientific, information which you must present in an interesting, fun, and engaging manner to groups of all sizes and levels of craft beer and coffee knowledge
  • Provide additional sales support as needed, including sample drops for key accounts
  • Maintain a weekly sales route
  • Assist with Chain distribution and store-level maintenance
  • Complete monthly surveys of key off-premise accounts
  • Merchandise existing product and maintain product displays
  • Occasionally, conduct Adult Beverage (alcohol) tastings
  • Generate deep brand awareness and positive product passion for Modern Times brands
  • Share passion for all things craft beer and coffee, as well as the ability to taste, describe, and evaluate qualities and characteristics
  • Set-up, attend and break down all festival materials for outside events
  • Coordinate and execute all aspects of promotional events
  • Enforce all applicable alcohol laws and rules
  • Be a team player and able to act with all levels of the organization
  • Act as a brand ambassador always
  • Other tasks as needed


  • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application
  • Able to pass a post-offer, pre-employment background check, including DMV history
  • Minimum 1-year related education or related work experience required
  • Must live in assigned territory, travel required for off-site scheduled events
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday availability required
  • Personal vehicle required (paid mileage reimbursement provided)
  • Professional appearance and demeanor
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills both internally with the Modern Times Sales’ Team and externally toward current and prospective accounts and fans.
  • Preferred Cicerone beer certification
  • Preferred Bar/service industry experience
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, growing company
  • Able to work independently and as a motivated team player
  • Must adhere to company’s policies and procedure


  • Able to both work and thrive in a high-stress environment that has a quiet to moderate noise level
  • Able to read and follow written instructions
  • Able to safely navigate the tasting room and snack bar areas, including crowded spaces
  • Able to work in indoor and outdoor environments with moderate noise and occasionally slippery floors
  • Able to comply with and enforce all health, safety, and personal hygiene policies and standards
  • Able to be active for prolonged periods
  • Able to stoop, crawl, twist, turn, lift, kneel, climb ladders and stairs
  • Able to regularly lift/carry 44-pound boxes with appropriate equipment and/or assistance
  • Able to regularly twist, turn, kneel, climb, stoop, bend, crawl, lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds using appropriate techniques and tools
  • Able to lift/move 165-pounds
  • Able to drive, stand, walk, kneel, lift and bend required for virtually the entire shift
  • Able to balance - pulling product, climb in and out of trucks or cars

Modern Times began as a 30bbl production brewery in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850, and many of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias. Today, we're distributed throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Maui, the Pacific Northwest, and select international markets. We operate a tasting room at the brewery, as well as in San Diego’s North Park community, and opened brewery/restaurant locations in Portland, Los Angeles, and Encinitas in 2018, Santa Barbara and Oakland in 2019, and Anaheim in 2020. We brewed our first batch on May 18th, 2013; our beer went on tap for the first time on June 24th, 2013; we held the soft opening for the Lomaland Fermentorium tasting room on August 9th, 2013; and our Grand Opening was September 7th, 2013.

In the summer of 2017, we became California’s first-ever employee-owned brewery, with 30% of the company now owned by our employees and the goal of 100% employee ownership in the future. We think that’s pretty radical.
