REPORTS TO: General Manager


The Hospitality Operations Lead reports to the General Manager and is responsible for assisting with the management of the staff, facilities, revenue, procurement, and organization of the day-to-day operations of the Modern Times Tasting Room. From inventory management and tasting room supply procurement to daily guest experience oversight. The variety of work in this position demands a detail-oriented, driven, well-organized individual committed to providing an outstanding customer service experience to our fans. S/He/They will set the tone, work ethic, and enthusiasm for the rest of the staff in our tasting rooms. While this job contains some supervisory duties, it is a tipped position, as the primary responsibilities still involve service to a customer. Candidates must share Modern Times’ commitments to quality, safety, business ethics, and continuous innovation.


- Ensure beverage and merchandise is organized, stocked, tracked, reported, ordered, sold, and inventoried accurately, both in the stock room and store

- Utilize existing platforms for tasting room supply procurement, including but not limited to, Obeer, Google Suite, etc.

- Maintain appropriate inventory display and quantities throughout the day, as well as quarterly reporting

- Be an expert in Modern Times history and heritage, history of brewing and brewing process, the coffee and craft beer industry, and beer and coffee styles and ingredients

- Adhere to the values listed in the Values Statements. Those values are: communication, honesty & trust, collaboration, accountability, humility, and willingness to learn & teach.

- Assist with training of new and existing the tasting room staff

- Align and work closely with the General Manager - Monitor inventory freshness and rotation of beer and coffee

- Work regular shifts in the tasting room (serving beer, bussing, cleaning, etc)

- Execute transactions through our POS system

- Maintain responsibility for cash drawers, counting, and reporting while on shift

- Help reinforce and provide accountability for all cash handling processes

- Sell and stock merchandise

- Move and re-stock kegs

- Minimize controllable expenses and maximize profits

- Assist in training tasks for new and existing staff

- Assume responsibility for proper line cleaning procedures

- Assist the Modern Times team as needed with special projects and other tasks requiring an “all-hands-on-deck” type of collaboration

- Perform opening/running/closing duties according to Modern Times policy and procedure

- Handle multiple tasks at one time efficiently and with an upbeat, friendly attitude

- Interact with and handle intoxicated guests in a positive and safety-minded manner

- Work independently and as a motivated team player

- Maintain all Modern Times Safety and Sanitation Standard

- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor

- Enforce all applicable alcohol laws and rules

- Comply with and enforce all health, safety, and personal hygiene policies and standards

- Be a team player and able to interact with all levels within the organization

- Adhere to and enforce all applicable local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations

- Other tasks as needed


- Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application

- Able to pass a post-offer, pre-employment background check

- LEAD, OLCC Permit, or applicable local safe alcohol service certificate for alcohol service required

- Valid ServSafe or applicable State or County Food Handler Certification required

- Cicerone certification required

- Comprehensive knowledge of the beer we make and the history of the company is required

- Previous people management experience preferred

- Knowledge of craft beer and the brewing process is highly preferred

- Strong interpersonal skills and a love for meeting and interacting with people

- Thorough attention to detail and desire to take initiative

- Must adhere to company’s policies and procedures

- Desire to work in a fast-paced, growing company


- Up to 20% travel time may be required


- Evening, holiday, and weekend availability required

- Opening, running, closing shift availability required

- Able to stand, walk, and be on your feet for prolonged periods

- Able to read and follow written English instructions

- Able to regularly twist, turn, kneel, climb, stoop, bend, crawl, lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 55 pounds using appropriate techniques and tools

- Able to safely navigate the tasting room and snack bar areas, including crowded spaces - Able to maneuver packages of any weight above 75 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance

- Able to move 165-pounds, using appropriate techniques and tools

- Able to work in a factory/production environment which may be loud, slick, humid, cold, and hot

- Able to work in indoor and outdoor environments with moderate noise and occasionally slippery floors

- Able to comply with and enforce all health, safety, and personal hygiene policies and standards

Modern Times began as a 30bbl production brewery in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850, and many of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias. Today, we're distributed throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Maui, the Pacific Northwest and select international markets. We operate a tasting room at the brewery, as well as in San Diego’s North Park community, and opened brewery/restaurant locations in Portland, Los Angeles, and Encinitas in 2018, Santa Barbara and Oakland in 2019, and Anaheim in 2020. We brewed our first batch on May 18th, 2013; our beer went on tap for the first time on June 24th 2013; we held the soft opening for the Lomaland Fermentorium tasting room on August 9th, 2013; and our Grand Opening was September 7th, 2013.

In the summer of 2017, we became California’s first-ever employee-owned brewery, with 30% of the company now owned by our employees and the goal of 100% employee ownership in the future. We think that’s pretty radical.
