Summary: This position is responsible for the accounting and finance operations of the company, production of timely and accurate financial reports, budgets and forecasts, inventory management, cash management, risk mitigation, timely and accurate benefits & payroll administration, a wide variety of complex compliance tasks, lease and contract management, comprehensive set of controls and procedures and many tasks needed by the business outside of a traditional accounting role.

Upland is a growing, complex and entrepreneurial company with over 300 employees and 13 unique business units. An average work day is 9+ hours but may be longer to meet deadlines or business needs. We use QuickBooks, a third-party payroll provider (ADP), a brewery-specific “ERP-lite” system and Toast POS System. The accounting team includes a part-time administrator (AP / AR / HR) and full-time accounting manager. A CPA firm prepares tax returns and performs a FS review. 

With a small accounting team, this position needs to regularly personally execute detailed transactions and reconciliations rather than delegating to others. The controller needs to have very broad accounting knowledge and be extremely flexible and proactive. 

Analysis & Reporting

  • Provide strong and proactive analytical support to senior management and owners; analyze line-of-business profitability; project cash flows.
  • Issue timely, accurate, and complete financial statements and commentary. Calculate budget variances and provide actionable feedback to business managers when business unit performance is not meeting expectations. Follow through to make sure that problems are being addressed
  • Manage the creation of the annual budget and forecasts for P&L, capital expenditures and working capital. Record and track fixed assets.
  • Participate in key decisions as a member of senior management team. Work with senior management and owners to use financial data to evaluate expansion opportunities and major capital expenditure.

Administration and Value Creation

  • Continuous improvement is critical in this role as the company continues to grow without adding significant overhead resources. Controller is responsible for making sure systems and processes improve every year and become more efficient, simple and accurate.
  • Accounting team is expected to identify and complete projects that improve the bottom line of the company (cost reduction, cash generation, process efficiency or revenue generation).
  • Assist brewery and retail operating managers with costs controls and ensure that sound business decisions are being made.    Analyze financial impact of potential capital projects so limited funds are being used for projects with the highest return.
  • Supervise accounting staff. Accountable for the accuracy and timeliness of their work product and meeting needs of business managers.
  • Maintain appropriate and cost-effective insurance, and manage P&C insurance policies, reporting, audits and claims.
  • Monitor cash flow, debt levels and compliance with debt covenants. Manage bank relationship and company credit cards.
  • Ensure that accounts payable, debt and owner distributions are paid and receivables collected in a timely manner.
  • Develop and administer incentive compensation plans that align the success of the company with the goals and actions of senior management.
  • Inventory management – create standard costs for products produced and make sure new products have appropriate profit margins.    Reorder of glassware, merchandise, tap handles and other inventory. Review for potential excess and obsolete inventory, work to prevent this from occurring and identify options to liquidate excess product. Work with sales team and distributors to ensure that price changes are communicated and executed accurately.
  • Identify and obtain grants and other assistance programs.
  • Work with distributors and third-party vendor to ensure that kegs are returned to brewery and available for use.
  • Make sure data from various systems are transferred to QuickBooks and work to simplify and automate this process as much as possible. 

Compliance and Controls

  • Provide data to CPA firm and ensuring timely receipt of annual tax returns, K-1s and reviewed financial statements.
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies, process and procedures.
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings (income, sales, property, excise, food & beverage, Brewer’s Report of Operation to Dept of Treasury, 1099s)
  • Review new distribution and other contracts
  • Work with Upland employees and third parties to make sure the appropriate alcohol permits are in place at retail operations, and various state and federal permits for beer production and distribution.

Desired Qualifications: The controller candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience with 10+ years of progressively responsible experience for a CPA firm company, restaurant group or manufacturing company. Preference will be given to candidates with the CPA, Certified Management Accountant designations or MBA. Craft beer and restaurant experience preferred.
