Russian River Brewing Company is searching for a full time Lab Manager to join our team!

This position is responsible for leading our QC and lab program which seeks to maintain, improve and protect the Russian River brand and all of our products, processes, and techniques while maintaining an exceptional commitment to our quality standards. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Leads, manages, directs, trains and works with the lab team ensuring a 100% commitment to our quality standards

• Capable of multi-tasking while continuing to work accurately and efficiently

• Ability to effectively prioritize, analyze, trouble-shoot, and solve problems in an efficient and timely manner

• Accurately collects and analyzes samples throughout the brewing process (sample analysis)

• Works very closely with the brewing team and Production Manager by reporting any out-of-specification results/trends and initiates or suggests corrective action

• Maintains product quality through adherence to good manufacturing practices, product specifications, and quality procedures; completes tasks thoroughly and accurately to ensure compliance with our quality standards and food safety

• Participates in the entire production process while delivering superior internal customer service

• Isolates and quarantines any product that does not meet quality standards

• Writes new and maintains existing lab Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

• Assists in maintaining lab sample inventory and dispersion of samples

• Records, analyzes and reports test results regularly to Owners, Production Manager and/or Lead Brewer

• Runs our yeast and microorganism management programs between both breweries, including future yeast propagation

• Manages our sensory program using Draughtlab software

• Responsible for operating, maintaining and training others on all current and future lab equipment including but not limited to: micropipettes, microscope or cellometer, PCR, gas chromatograph, Alcolyzer and densitometer or other similar equipment, Carbonation meter, UV/Vis Spectrophotometer, Shaker tables, pH Meter, Laboratory centrifuge, Vortexer, Sterile air hood, Heating block, Cell disrupter, Autoclave, Cleaning agents, sanitizing agents, microbiological media, organic solvents, corrosive acids and bases, and other hazardous laboratory chemicals, including some carcinogens.

• Analyzes results of dissolved oxygen (DO) and total package oxygen (TPO) tests and immediately communicates this information to the packaging team

• Contacts technical support internally or externally for assistance in the event of equipment failure

• Utilizes external lab analysis as needed

• Occasionally attends industry events and participates in continuing education

• Ability and willingness to maintain flexible work schedules including occasional weekends

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has direct reports

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Ability to operate, maintain, and learn how to use all existing and future lab equipment

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing

• Must possess a high level of proficiency in Excel and the ability to effectively utilize MS Word and Outlook

• Knowledge of Proleit brewing software is a plus

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Food Science or related field is required

• Minimum of 5 years in a previous lab management or lead lab tech position, ideally in craft beer

• Able to speak, read, write, and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace

• Creativity, flexibility, positivity, and the desire to be an active participant on a dynamic brewing team are a must

• Prior supervisory experience desired

• Passion and enthusiasm for science, quality and beer

• Professional appearance and demeanor

• Must be at least 21 years old

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to do the following:

Much of the work consists of conveying information verbally and in writing. While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to stand for long periods of time and walk; use fingers, handle, or feel objects; reach with hands; talk and hear; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, bend, twist and crouch. The employee must occasionally lift, carry, and/or move up to 25 pounds. Use of arms above or below the shoulder is sometimes required. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Requires manual dexterity and ability to quickly move hand(s), hand with arm, grasp, manipulate or assemble.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

• Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work.
