SoDel Concepts is hiring for the Head Brewer Position at Thompson Island Brewing Company and Ocean View Brewing Company. Owned and operated by SoDel Concepts, in Rehoboth Beach DE, (www.sodelconcepts.com) SoDel Concepts is a family owned and operated local restaurant group.

Thompson Island Brewing Company and Ocean View Brewing Company brew on state-of-the-art Braukon systems, 8.5 BBL and 4.5 BBL respectively. We strive to create world class beer in cutting edge and traditional styles. Each brew team has won numerous awards and medals for their beer, including a gold medal for our flagship IPA, Thompson Island IPA at the 2020 US Open Beer Championship. Our chef driven restaurants provide us with inspiration, known for both quality beer and delicious food. We host frequent beer dinners, and often collaborate with our chefs on brewing projects to create unparalleled dining experiences for our guests. All members of the brew team must support the culture of SoDel Concepts and participate in their main tenets of creating beautiful food and beer, developing the people we work with, and giving back to the communities in which we live and work.

The Head Brewer’s main objective is to oversee and execute all brewing tasks from grain to glass in an efficient, safe environment. The Head Brewer has the support of a renown regional craft brewer for any needed guidance including, but not limited to, safety training, quality testing, ingredient procurement, maintenance know how, engineering, and recipe development. The Head Brewer must have a strong working knowledge of brewing, cellaring, and packaging operations; be a detail-oriented person; maintain high standards of cleanliness and safety; and support the objectives and goals of SoDel Concepts.

This position is a full-time salaried position eligible for health insurance, employer-sponsored retirement plan, sick time, paid vacation, profit sharing, and growth opportunities.

Requirements

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:

• Minimum 2 years professional brewing experience

• Personnel management experience with the ability to lead a team

• Experience with raw ingredient handling, evaluation and inventory management

• Knowledge of brewing science and yeast handling

• Experience with recipe development

• Aptitude with mechanical trouble shooting and repair

• Strong organizational, record-keeping and software skills, full operating knowledge of EXCEL

• Ability to work independently under direct supervision of Beverage Director and Brewery Consultant

• Ability to multi-task and prioritize duties efficiently

• Proficiency in evaluating and monitor beer quality

• Ability to create and adhere to brewery budget and production goals

• Canning and packaging experience

• Flexibility in availability to ensure maximum production

• Ability to interact with brewpub guests and the public

• Strong communication skills, verbal and written

• Ability to take direction, follow recipes and accept constructive criticism

• A passion for craft beer, with a dedication to the strong core values and beliefs within the craft beer industry as put for the by the Brewers Association

• A desire to learn and grow with our company

• Understanding and adherence to safety and sanitation policy put forth by SoDel Concepts and OSHA

• Understanding and adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices


RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

• Brewing beer

• Overseeing all aspects of brewing and supervise the brew team

• Staff scheduling

• Creating and executing the brewing schedule

• Training new and existing members of the brew team in all aspects of brewing, CIPs, packaging, maintenance, recipe creation, safety standards, data entry and analysis, record keeping, etc.

• Maintenance of brewery equipment

• Maintain, monitor, and inventory for the brewery including all raw materials, packaging materials, equipment materials

• Create forecasts

• Create and adhere to budget, track COGs

• Analyze depletions to inform future production schedule

• Order all needed materials and schedule deliveries/reception

• Maintain records of transfers of raw materials, packaging materials, and beer between SoDel breweries

• Creating a good work environment that fosters growth, respect, curiosity, and passion for brewing beer


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:

• Ability to lift 60 pounds and move 165 pounds safely

• Ability to work in wet environment with humidity, steam, and heat

• Ability to bend, twist, kneel, climb stairs and ramps often

• Manual dexterity

• Endurance to work long shifts when needed

• Ability to stand, stoop, bend, and work overhead over the course of several hours

• Ability to work in small, confined spaces

• Ability to work in a loud environment

• Willingness to work with hazardous chemicals necessary for brewery sanitation
