The Brewer I is an assistant brewer role and reports to the Production Manager. Brewer I’s are responsible for many aspects of the day-to-day operations of the brewhouse. They play active roles in brewing and preparing the Brewers II and III for the upcoming brews according to the production schedule. Brewer I will follow brewing procedures and recipes established for and approved by Modern Times Beer. Candidates must share Modern Times’ commitments to quality, safety, business ethics, and continuous innovation.

THE EVERYDAY VIEW

  • Raw materials receipt, storage and retrieval for brewing including driving a forklift to organize raw materials
  • Milling up to 3,000 pounds in 50-55-pound bag increments, in accordance with a brew/recipe sheet, over approximately 45 minutes
  • Assist the Brewer II and/or III in wort production, kettle souring, and hopping on the 30 Bbl brewhouse
  • Liaison between brewers and inventory coordinators to ensure malt bills are properly built and report any discrepancies
  • Correctly engaging/disengaging valves associated with the brewhouse
  • Aid in spent grain removal, which includes the manipulation of a manual knife gate
  • Assist in the harvesting and/or pitching of yeast from the prescribed vessel while following sanitary procedures
  • Follow established procedures to clean the brewhouse vessels
  • Safely handle cleaning chemicals, and use the prescribed amount for each task
  • General cleaning of horizontal, vertical and sub-grate surfaces
  • Basic understanding of Brewhouse Operations
  • BT/CIP, FV SIP, Yeast harvesting, and yeast tank CIP
  • General inventory and upkeep of malt, hops, brewing aids, cleaning supplies
  • Proper use of pH meter and Anton-Paar Densitometer
  • Brewhouse CIP
  • General knowledge and understanding of brewhouse vessels, operation, and processes
  • Accurate and complete filling out of all forms, checklists and recipe sheets. Complete understanding of daily checklist of priorities and responsibilities for Assistant Brewer i.e. Brewer I
  • Other tasks may be assigned as needed

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application
  • Able to pass a post-offer, pre-employment background check
  • Minimum 2 years of commercial production brewery experience
  • Strong work ethic and self-starting attitude
  • Good interpersonal skills and team spirit
  • Ability to operate a forklift and pallet jack
  • Strong possession of common sense in all areas of work, including problem-solving and communication
  • The desire to work in a fast-paced, growing company
  • Willingness to regularly work during evenings and weekends

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Evening, weekend, holiday availability required
  • Ability to work any shift in a 24/7 production environment required
  • Able to stand for prolonged periods
  • Able to stoop, crawl, twist, turn, lift, kneel, climb ladders and stairs
  • Able to manipulate valves and clamps
  • Able to read and follow written English instructions
  • Able to regularly lift/carry 44-pound boxes
  • Able to regularly lift/carry 55-pound bags above waist level
  • Able to regularly twist, turn, kneel, climb, stoop, bend, crawl, lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds using appropriate techniques and tools
  • Able to lift/move 165 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance
  • Able to proficiently stack and move barrels on barrel racks
  • Able to comply with safe chemical handling procedures, including personal protection equipment such as gloves and goggles
  • Able to both work and thrive in a high-stress environment that has a quiet to moderate noise level
  • Able to read and follow written English instructions
  • Able to safely navigate the tasting room and snack bar areas, including crowded spaces
  • Able to work in a factory/production environment which may be loud, slick, humid, cold, and hot
  • Able to work in indoor and outdoor environments with moderate noise and occasionally slippery floors
  • Able to comply with and enforce all health, safety, and personal hygiene policies and standards
