Job Overview:

The lead brewer will be responsible for the majority production of BearWaters Brewing beers and will support growth of new brands and their production on a 15bbl system in Canton, NC.

The lead brewer position is responsible for all aspects of the processes related to wort production, fermentation, conditioning, treatment, clarification, carbonation, and packaging of product. This position works closely with employees and aspects of brewery packaging and cellar operations.

This position requires a hard working, dedicated, and self-motivated individual with the ability to troubleshoot.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Strict adherence to brewery safety guidelines
  • Thorough understanding of all brewhouse operations, vessels, and CIP procedures
  • Maintain a clean working space with implementation of sanitary procedures
  • Keep accurate and organized production records
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair standard brewery & packaging equipment
  • Maintain a brewing production schedule
  • Track and maintain accurate inventory of raw materials, supplies, and finished beer
  • Provide assistance in the brewery cellar (transfers, packaging, cleaning, data collection, maintenance)
  • Produce wort, monitor fermentation, add dry hops/fruit/other to tanks
  • Safely remove spent grain from the mash/lauter tun
  • Yeast management - including the harvesting, cell counting/viability check, and pitching of yeast from
  • a brink
  • Be a communicative team-player and interact with employees at all levels within the organization
  • Adhere to all applicable local, state, & federal laws, rules, and regulations
  • Willingness to represent the brewery at beer festivals & other brewery events
  • Other tasks may be assigned as needed


  • Minimum 1 year commercial brewing experience on a 7bbl or larger system
  • Proficiency using a computer/tablet and able to utilize programs such as MS Office (Word, Excel, etc)
  • as well as web-based office tools like Google Docs, Slack, etc.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and productive demeanor focused on company goals
  • Ability to work independently with attention to detail and with a mind for continuous improvement
  • Strong sensory experience – formal training preferred

Ideal candidates will also have the following:

  • Formal brewing education
  • Mechanical inclination
  • Forklift experience
  • 3+ years professional brewing experience
  • 1-2 years managerial experience\0

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to stoop, crawl, twist, turn, lift, kneel, climb ladders and stairs
  • Ability to repetitively lift up to 60lbs.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 165 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance
  • Ability to safely handle and use chemicals related to brewery operations and to wear appropriate personal
  • protective equipment
  • Ability to work in an environment where noise, temperature, and humidity levels may vary
