Job Title: Head Brewer
Job Summary:
The head brewer is a key position in our small microbrewery responsible for overseeing the brewing operations and ensuring the production of high-quality craft beer. This role involves managing the brewing process from start to finish and maintaining quality control. The head brewer must possess a deep understanding of brewing techniques, ingredients, and equipment to consistently create exceptional beers that meet the brewery's standards and customer expectations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Brewing Operations:
- Plan and execute the brewing schedule according to production demands and inventory requirements.
- Manage all aspects of the brewing process, including mashing, lautering, boiling, fermenting, conditioning, and packaging.
- Monitor and control fermentation parameters, such as temperature, yeast pitching, and oxygen levels.
- Conduct regular sensory evaluations and quality checks to ensure consistency and adherence to product specifications.
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all brewing processes.
2. Ingredient Management:
- Source and procure brewing ingredients, including malts, hops, yeast, and adjuncts.
- Manage inventory levels of raw materials and ensure their availability for production.
- Collaborate with suppliers to maintain relationships and stay up-to-date with industry trends and new ingredients.
3. Equipment and Facility Management:
- Oversee the maintenance and cleanliness of brewing equipment, tanks, and production areas.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any brewing equipment or process issues promptly.
- Coordinate with the maintenance team for repairs and upgrades as needed.
- Implement and follow safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment for the brewing team.
4. Recipe Development and Innovation:
- Collaborate with the brewing team and management to develop new beer recipes and styles.
- Conduct research and stay informed about emerging brewing techniques and trends.
- Experiment with different ingredients and processes to create unique and innovative beers.
- Document and maintain accurate records of recipes, brewing logs, and modifications.
5. Quality Control and Assurance:
- Implement and maintain quality control measures throughout the brewing process.
- Conduct regular sensory analysis and quality checks to ensure beers meet the brewery's standards.
- Monitor and address any potential quality issues or deviations promptly.
- Implement corrective actions and process improvements as necessary.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Extensive knowledge and experience in all aspects of brewing, including recipe development, brewing techniques, and quality control.
- Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to motivate and guide a team effectively.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high-quality standards.
- Solid understanding of brewing equipment and maintenance requirements.
- Proficient in data analysis and record-keeping.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
- Physical stamina and the ability to lift heavy objects.
- Relevant brewing certifications or formal brewing education is preferred.
